"Soto Sokaraja" : Authentic Banyumas Soup with peanut sauce

Arisarmu -  Many never imagine that peanut sauce will be added into their soup. However, this uncommon recipe attracts a lot of Banyumas people living in other regions to always miss their home town a lot, especially with the delicacy of "Soto Sokaraja".

Sokaraja, merely 11 minutes (4.9 km) drives from Purwokerto, is a sub-district in Banyumas Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. It's well known, especially along Sudirman Street, as a culinary center where visitors can enjoy the delicacy of an authentic Banyumas dish and snacks, such as "Soto Sokaraja", "Getuk Goreng", "Nopia" and more.

According to Sukardi, a father of five, who has been running a "Soto Lama" restaurant in Sokaraja since 1987. His ability of making "Soto". he got it naturally from his father, Mawardi, who started selling "Soto" on Sudirman Street Sokaraja in 1950s. At first, he followed his elder brother who had run a "Soto Restaurant" (Raja Soto Lama) earlier.

Nowadays, Soto stalls, which are many in Sokaraja, even with different names, such as "Soto Lama", "Raja Soto Lama", "Soto Kecik" and "Soto Sutri, generally called as "Soto Sokaraja" for they are within Sokaraja area.

"Soto" (soup) is one of Indonesian main courses which can be served at any time, although, i personally prefer having "Soto" for either breakfast or lunch.
There is a variety of "Soto" throughout Indonesia, it reflects from a diversity of its culture, that possibly make different ingredients among regions.

"Soto Sokaraja" is considered as a unique "Soto", obviously seen from its ingredients that use "Kupat" (compressed rice cake) and peanut sauce.
"Soto Sokaraja" offers three options for customers to be chosen, "Chicken Soto", "Beef Soto", or "Tripe Soto".

"Soto Sokaraja" has been my favorite since i was a child. I prefer "Tripe Soto", and when i order it, then the seller will prepare a bowl, cut "Kupat" into a half, then slice them smaller to be put into the bowl, then add sliced spring onions and sliced tripe, add sprouts and colored "Krupuk" (crackers). Lastly, he pours hot beef broth onto those ingredients.
The seller serves the "Tripe Soto" along with a bowl of peanut sauce.
The addition of the peanut sauce will increase the delicacy of the "Soto", improve its thickness and savory taste and give a little hot as well as sweet taste.

In addition, "Soto Sokaraja" will be more delicious if we eat it along with "Klanting" (ring casava fritters) which are available on the table in front of customers.
