Prambanan Temple (Rara Jonggrang Complex) : The Hindu Temple Compound, Yogyakarta

Prambanan Temple, the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia, has long been famed among tourists around the world.

Prambanan Temple, situated on the border between Central Java Province and Yogyakarta Special Region, built by Rakai Pikatan in the 9th century during the reign of the Syailendra dynasty, dedicated to the expression of three great Hindu godliness: Brahma (the Creator), Vishnu (the Preserver) and Shiva (the Destroyer). And it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Prambanan Temple is also called Rara Jonggrang Temple. It's related with a folklore believed by some Javaneses about Prince Bandung Bondowoso from Pengging Kingdom who killed King Baka, then when he saw the beauty of Princess Rara Jonggrang, King Baka's daughter, he proposed her to be his wife.
She agreed with the provision of Bandung Bondowoso had to build her a thousand temples only in a single night, and he accepted the impossible challenge.
With his supranatural power, Bandung Bondowoso which was helped by genie troops started doing the mission, and by 3 am, they had been building 999 temples, only one more temple to be completed.
Knowing this situation, Rara Jonggrang made a trick by ordering the villagers to pound rice and burn straws as if already dawn, and seeing this, all the genies ran away.
Realizing to have been cheated, Bandung Bondowoso got angry and then he cured Rara Jonggrang to be a statue which is now still inside the biggest temple in Prambanan Temple Complex.

Prambanan Temple is decorated with relief panels which tell about the Hindu epics of Ramayana and Krishnayana.
Ramayana relief illustrates how Shinta, prince Rama's wife, kidnapped by Rahwana, a demon king. And a troop of monkeys led by Sugriwa along with Hanoman, a white monkey, helped Rama to rescue Shinta.
This epic story is also performed in "Sendratari Ramayana" (Ramayana Ballet) on Trimurti open stage every full moon with the temple become the background of the performance stage.
