Martabak is a popular snack in Indonesia. Both sweet and savoury martabak are delicious. No wonder the vendors are everywhere across this tropical country. From sidewalk carts to restaurants.
The classical types of martabak have existed since a long time ago, and remain favourite among the locals. Even though, nowadays many stalls offer new variant of martabak with various toppings.
Martabak Manis or sweet thick pancake has traditional fillings which consists of chocolate rice, crushed peanut, sesame seed and sweetened condensed milk. And for you who love sweet snacks will indeed enjoy it. Martabak Bangka and Terang Bulang are the renowned names of sugary version of martabak.
While Martabak Telur or the Savoury one is an omelette pancake mixed with spring onion and minced meat. The original version uses duck eggs and minced beef. It is served with pickled cucumbers and chilies.
Martabak Telur is sometimes served during a wedding celebration as small bite appetizers to be eaten prior the main course. The guests can also see the process of making it.
I think the opposite taste of each other, sweet and savoury, provides costumers option. If we are bored with Martabak Manis, we can order the other one and vice versa.
