"Kota Lama", Little Netherlands-Semarang, takes you back to the 17th century

When you enter "Kota Lama", you may think that you have gone astray but you are soon amazed with your surrounding old buildings. Actually, you are already in the other side of Semarang which is famed with its ancient Dutch colonial buildings, established in 17th.

There are approximately 50 remaining old buildings, sit in 31 hectares land, which parts of them still being used as offices, restaurants, a church, a railway station and the others.
In overall, those buildings resemble to European old building around 1700s. These things obviously visible from their ornaments, such as the huge windows and doors, colored glass, the unique roofs as well as bunkers.

"Kota Lama" used to be fortified with a wall, roughly 2 meters high and 60 centimeters thick according to Yogyakarta Archaeological Agency which did excavation throughout 2009-2014, before it was demolished in 1824, due to the economic growth, to provide a railway for a steam locomotif line which support Semarang as a prominent international trading port city.



Semarang is a vibrant city in Central Java, Indonesia which has a hot weather whole year, especially during the day time which can reach around 33 degree Celsius. So if you intent to explore "Kota Lama" and don't want to get wet from sweat. I suggest you to travel there at night or after 6 pm, i consider it as the best time, where you can experience its classical night life through the activities of its citizens and discover why " Kota Lama" is trully worth to visit.

The district is in north Semarang, used to be considered as a high crime area, but after it has been managed well by the local government, "Kota Lama" becomes a nice region for hanging out, taking selfies as well as a recreation area.

Here you can see many collections of old money, old lamps, old books and more.

In addition, if you are in "Kota Lama" on saturday or sunday evening, there is, usually, a music performance which held in "Srigunting Park" to entertain the visitors. 
If you feel hungry, there are many options for you to choose from "Angkringan" (Javanese style of food stall offers food in cheap price and opens at night) to restaurants.
