Pagoda Avalokitesvara as Semarang City Landmark


I trust many of you are already familiar with Semarang, a harbour city and a capital of Central Java Province, easily recognized with some iconic landmarks. surely one of the most visible is Pagoda Avalokitesvara with its unique and beautiful building has shown how strong Chinese cultural influence on this vibrant city.

Soaring high at 45 meters, Pagoda Avalokitesvara is notted as the tallest pagoda in Indonesia. it's nestled within the complex of Vihara Buddhagaya Watugong on jalan Perintis Kemerdekaan Semarang, opposite to Kodam IV Diponegoro (a military area command of Central Java).
This building is also dedicated to worship Kwan Im or Guan Yin, a Goddess of compassion who is a guardian of women and her five-meter statue is inside pagoda.
 As a protectress, she is also worshipped by sailors, merchants and inmates as well.

Since the architecture of Pagoda Avalokitesvara is so stunning with strong influence from both China and Thailand. Thereby, this renowned Semarang City landmark is not only visited by Buddhists who want to pray, but also attract local tourists who wish to get the nice poses in an amazing scene.
