Gunung Andong - Magelang: Exciting Adventure Tourism

Arisarmu - I want to share an amazing hike up mount Andong (gunung Andong) for you who like doing adventure tourism. And if you are lucky enough, you will see stunning scenery from up there.

The popularity of adventure tourism is increasing due to the desire of travelers who tend to seek new and different experiences.
Adventure tourism or adventure travel according to Wikipedia, is a type of niche tourism which is focused on a specific product relating to exploration or travel with a particular stage of risk and certain skill as well as physical exertion may be required.

Some of us prefer going on an adventure to laying on a beach gazing a magnificent blue ocean.
Day hiking is a part of adventure tourism which supposed to be fun. It can solely be described as a stroll in a natural environment which provides you fresh air and insta-worthy views. It's truly great if you love the outdoors and it doesn't last overnight.

You may think that hike up a mountain as a part of adventure tourism that requires to take on tough trails for hours. But you don't need to worry. There is a little mountain in Magelang Regency, mount Andong, which is famed as a friendly mountain for novice climbers. And by climbing this mountain you can still feel the atmosphere of mountain climbing and also excursion without having to spend to much physical exertion and times.

Mount Andong, officially located in Girirejo Village, Ngablak Sub-district, Magelang Regency - Central Java, rises to an elevation of 1.726 meters above the sea level. Just like Telomoyo mountain which is nearby, mount Andong is also non volcanic mountain.
The popularity of mount Andong among local people supported by its location which is on the border of Salatiga, Semarang Regency and Magelang Regency.

If you intend to hike up to the summit, there are three base camps which you can choose; Sawit, Pendem, and Gugik. Arguably, Sawit Base Camp (Taruna Jayagiri Base Camp) is the most popular among climbers, probably because of the easiest hiking trail.
Hiking up to the top of mount Andong takes you between 45 minutes to 2 hours and pass through 3 posts; Post 1 - Kemuning, Post 2 - Dewa Ndaru, Post 3 - Watu Mayang, until you arrive on its three peaks; Makam Peak, Jiwa Peak (or Andong Peak), and Alap-alap Peak.
If the weather's fine, you will see some mountains from up there; mt Merbabu, mt Merapi, mt Ungaran, mt Telomoyo, mt Sindoro, mt Sumbing and even mt Slamet.
Watching those beautiful mountains and sunrise are the strong reason for many climbers to camp on the top of mount Andong.

Last month, on saturday, May 12, David's school held a character building experience for students by climbing up to the top of mount Andong. The mount is not too far from his school. It's less than forty minutes drive. I took him (my son) to Taruna Jayagiri Base Camp or usually called as Sawit Base Camp.
We left home at 6 am. Students, accompanied by some teachers, supposed to start hiking at 7 am, although some students had already camped there since friday night.

Actually, there was no intention for me to hike up the mountain until we arrived at the base camp. Then, the charm of mount Andong had changed my mind.

I really enjoyed doing adventure tourism by hiking up to the summit of mount Andong with its fresh and cool air, even though on the top was so hot. I also met a group of teenagers from Sleman, Yogyakarta Special Region, camping on Alap-alap peak while other groups were camping on Jiwa Peak (Andong Peak).
I was lucky that I could see awesome scenery of a mountain range that I've mention it before. And if you want to hike up to mount Andong I suggest you to climb it earlier, otherwise it may be cloudy and you may be upset for not getting what your expectation.

The most surprising, I found food stalls on both Jiwa Peak (or Andong Peak) and Alap Alap Peak selling instant noodles, rice, fried eggs, snacks and some drinks. But there are no toilets on the top of mount Andong! 😀
