Candi Sewu, the second biggest Buddhist temple complex in Indonesia

Located within the complex of Prambanan Temple Tourism Park is the second largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia after Borobudur temple.

Candi Sewu, derived from a Javanese word "sewu" means a thousand, although in its obviousness isn't until a thousand temples.
This temple complex totally consists of 249 buildings: 1 main temple which lies in the centre, surrounded by 8 "Candi Penjuru" (Penjuru Temple) on every cardinal direction, while the other 240 temples called "Candi Perwara" encircling the complex.
Scholars estimate this temple complex was built in the 8th century during the reign of Mataram Kingdom with its rulers Rakai Panangkaran and Rakai Pikatan, a Hindu.
Although the king embraced Hinduism, but at that time Mataram Kingdom got a strong influence from Wangsa Syailendra who was Buddhist.
It can be concluded, thereat, Hindus and Buddhists lived together peacefully.

Sewu Temple may look dim against the famous Prambanan Temple which is only 800 m away. And i think if you are already at Prambanan Temple and have enough time, why don't you head to Sewu Temple where on the way there you can see Lumbung Temple and Bubrah Temple as well. Perhaps you won't have any other opportunity to explore those temples in the future.
