A Brief Review About Some Traditional Snacks in Indonesia


A better way to understand more about a country's heritage and culture is through its traditional meals and snacks.

As a tropical country in South East Asia, Indonesia enjoys abundant rain and sunshine and also blessed with its fertile soils which are good to grow a lot of useful plants. The plants can be processed into a source of staple food and delicious traditional snacks.


One day when our neighbor had a family event, we received from them several traditional snacks. They were more than enough for four of us. And in this article I want to give a brief description about those traditional snacks.

1. Wajik

Wajik is made with steamed glutinous rice. It is sticky rice cake with sweet taste from palm sugar which is cooked along with coconut milk and pandan leaves (Pandanus amaryllifolius) for flavour.

2. Jenang

Jenang is commonly known as dodol in some regionsIt is a sweet food made of rice flour, coconut milk and palm sugar. It is a bit sticky when we bite it.

3. Tape Ketan

Tape ketan is mostly wrapped in banana leaves in order to get the distinctive aroma and taste. It is fermented sticky rice. It has sweet taste and contains little alcohol.

4. Kacang Rebus

Kacang Rebus are boiled peanuts in salty water. They are truly delicious and part of classic snacks in Java.

5. Pisang Goreng

Pisang Goreng or fried banana can be eaten as dessert or for snacking.
